Rate available for contraceptive consultation and ultrasound IUD: what does this mean for your practice?

12 November 2024|By Titus Health Care

Good news for midwives! From 1 January 2025, the contraceptive care you have been providing for years will finally be reimbursed by health insurers. The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) has set rates for this, allowing midwives to claim for the contraception consultation, the follow-up check of this and certain ultrasounds.

Rates for the contraception consultation

The fee for a contraception consultation is €31.86 for consultations shorter than 20 minutes (or with demonstrable reason for longer than 20 min, €63.72. During the consultation, the midwife discusses important topics such as the anamnesis, information on contraception, risk analysis and the prescription of contraception in accordance with the NHG Standard on Contraception. This rate also applies to follow-up checks, for example after the placement of an IUD.

To support you in this, Titus Health Care offers a standard questionnaire that you can use for this purpose. In addition, we have a counselling card showing the different contraceptive methods, complete with their reliability and full size. For information leaflets on the T-Safe, Multi-Safe, Flexi-T and the implantation rod, please contact the project manager in your region (also available in several languages).

Please note that the general education on contraception provided postpartum during the puerperium and aftercare falls here not below.

Echo on medical grounds

For specific medical indications, you can also claim an ultrasound to check the IUD's position. This applies, for example, when:

  • The threads of the IUD are not visible during the follow-up check.
  • A displaced IUD or perforation of the uterus is suspected, based on symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever or persistent vaginal bleeding.

The fee for this ultrasound is €50.37.

Support, training and digital tools

For the latest developments and facts about contraception, visit our website, where we offer several accredited training courses. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the project manager of your region or call us.

Would you like to make your practice more visible to women looking for a contraception consultation or a place to have an IUD inserted? Then sign up for a listing on spiralplaces.co.uk.

In addition, there is a special digital prescription system developed for midwives: the contraception portal. With this system, you can easily prescribe various forms of contraception, which are then sent to your practice address. If you order IUDs via this system, you will receive a free button probe and an ampoule of lidocaine with each implant.

The new reimbursements offer more opportunities and recognition for the contraceptive care you provide as midwives. Make sure your practice benefits from this!
