Lesson pack Sex & Contraception: Support for Teachers

29 October 2024|By Tess Garter

The Sex & Contraception teaching package has been specially developed to support teachers and guest lecturers in giving an accessible and interactive lesson on contraception to upper secondary school classes.

This pack provides a complete guide to introduce students to contraception and sexual health in an interactive and informative way. The focus is on how to work, reliability, and shared responsibility when using contraceptive methods. In addition, attention is paid to the prevention of STIs.

Content of the Learning Package

The package includes a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation that encourages classroom discussions, contraception information pocket cards to make the lesson interactive, a cycle card to clarify the menstrual cycle and fertility, and demonstration materials such as IUDs. Informative leaflets are also available for students to take home.

Practical Support

The teaching package is designed to be used independently by teachers, but it is also possible to engage guest teachers. Schools can use subsidies for this purpose, such as the Healthy Relationships & Sexuality Incentive Scheme of Healthy School.

Tip guest lecturers: many midwives have specialised in contraceptive care and regularly provide information at secondary schools. To find midwives who specialise in contraception in your area, visit spiralplaces.co.uk.

Rules of conduct and Safety in the Classroom

To create a safe learning environment in which every student feels free to speak, it is advisable to establish clear rules of behaviour beforehand, such as: we do not laugh at each other, all questions are welcome and what is discussed stays in class.

Preparation and Evaluation

The lesson pack contains practical tips for preparing and implementing the lesson, as well as suggestions for student evaluation and feedback. By following this approach, you will ensure an effective and engaging lesson experience.
