Midwives have traditionally provided advice on contraception, particularly during follow-up after a birth. However, since September 2014, midwives are now also allowed to prescribe contraception.

Once they have received training, midwives are also allowed to insert intrauterine devices (IUDs). A number of midwives have already been trained in this procedure and have now begun fitting IUDs. The expectation is that with this new change in the regulations, more midwives will become involved in the insertion of IUDs.

If any complications occur, midwives are always advised to refer their clients to a GP or gynecologist.
