Midwives have been providing information on contraception for quite some time, especially after childbirth. From September 2014 midwives may also prescribe contraception independently.
Midwives may also insert coils if they are authorised to do so. A number of midwives have been trained and are already inserting coils with their clients. The expectation is that with the new regulation several obstetricians will be able to insert coils.
In case of complications, the midwives will of course refer clients to a general practitioner or gynaecologist.
